Fraunhofer IWU container is shown where in the REJOOL hydrogen compressor is integrated

REJOOL provides the compression technology for a pioneering hydrogen microgrid project by Referenzfabrik.H2 at Fraunhofer IWU – marking an important step toward decentralized and sustainable energy systems.

These innovative microgrids make renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power storable by converting surplus electricity into hydrogen via electrolysis. When needed, the stored hydrogen is converted back into electricity using fuel cells, creating a reliable, decentralized, and emission-free power supply. This approach is ideally suited for off-grid or critical applications that require uninterrupted energy availability.

Unlike traditional battery systems, hydrogen microgrids can store large amounts of energy efficiently over extended periods, with minimal loss. This makes them a stable and sustainable alternative, particularly in regions with fluctuating power availability. Potential applications include hospitals, industrial facilities, sports complexes, and rural areas – wherever energy security and climate neutrality must go hand in hand.

A key component of the microgrid system is REJOOL’s PIONYR compression technology. The compact, efficient, and oil-free H₂ compressor ensures the safe storage of produced hydrogen at high pressure and plays a decisive role in the overall system’s performance and reliability. Thanks to its low-maintenance design and modular integration, PIONYR is ideally suited for scalable plug-and-play solutions – such as those implemented within the HyGrid project by Referenzfabrik.H2.

With its contribution, REJOOL is proud to support the advancement of energy autonomy and the decarbonization of decentralized power networks worldwide. The insights gained through this project provide valuable groundwork for future applications of hydrogen-based microgrids – from Europe to Africa and beyond, especially in regions facing challenging energy conditions.
